  8. Connectix Announces 16MB Virtual Memory for Macintosh Plus

  10. Menlo Park, CA--June 18, 1990 — Connectix Corporation today announced
  11. the release of Virtual 2.0 for the Macintosh Plus, the second generation of its
  12. unique virtual memory utility for 68030-accelerated Mac Plus systems.

  14. Version 2.0.2 allows Mac Plus users, for the first time ever, to access up to
  15. 16 megabytes of internal memory and provides this capability as a transparent
  16. software retrofit to the existing operating system.  The product will work on
  17. any Mac Plus after a 68030-based CPU accelerator card is installed.  The
  18. software is priced at $199 and Version 1.0 users of the program will receive
  19. Version 2.0 as a free upgrade.  Certified Apple developers and Apple employees
  20. can qualify for special pricing by contacting Connectix.

  22. "The advent of 68030 accelerator cards selling for less than $500 means that we
  23. can expect to see a large new class of high performance compact Macintoshes",
  24. stated Roy McDonald, President of Connectix.  "One of the main features of the
  25. 68030 CPU is that, unlike the original 68000, it can support virtual memory.
  26. The sixteen megabytes of virtual memory created by Virtual 2.0 for the Mac Plus
  27. transforms the Plus into a powerful MultiFinder workstation.  Ironically, the
  28. Plus now offers more application memory than any other Macintosh– surpassing
  29. even the IIfx."

  31. Virtual memory allows a CPU to use a portion of the hard disk drive as if it
  32. were semiconductor RAM.  Once the Virtual™ software is installed, the Mac Plus,
  33. by rapid accesses to the hard disk drive, operates as though it had up to 16
  34. Mbytes of RAM installed, but at a small fraction of the cost.  The amount of
  35. virtual memory is adjustable using a cdev, and for each megabyte of virtual
  36. memory a megabyte of hard drive space is required, regardless of the amount of
  37. installed physical RAM.
